In
his budget of November 1995, the Chancellor made changes to the rates
of excise duty on motor fuels to make gas even more attractive to road
users.
He
specifically mentioned the environmental advantages of Autogas and advised
that future excise duty would continue to be adjusted to encourage the
wider use of low emission vehicles.
Succesive
administrations have followed this line by retaining the duty on Autogas
at that level, whilst increasing the duty on the so-called ‘dirty fuels’.
In 1997 the differential was increased by a further 4p per litre.
